Scientific interview-
frequently asked questions at the dermatologist’s clinic

How do I know if the skin is dry? How do I recognise neurodermatitis? What can I do about it?

Dry skin often occurs on babies’ faces. The skin is rougher than usual and flaky. If the whole body is affected, the diaper area usually stays unaffected. Usually, neurodermatitis in babies also starts in the face, many children then have eczema on the cheeks (or itchy eczema, an often times read inflammatory skin reaction combined with itchy skin), although other areas (apart from the diaper area) can also be affected by dry or inflamed spots. Regular application of cream and bathing in rehydrating oil baths (take care - oil makes babies very slippery and difficult to hold) help the skin to absorb more moisture and fats. Irritating factors such as woollen clothing next to the skin, scratchy labels or seams and chlorinated water should be avoided.

If the child starts to scratch, or is sleeping badly, you should see a doctor for treatment.
